Power Up Your Create 3

The FREE Intro to ROS 2 with Create 3 mini-series is a crash course on using ROS 2 to control the Create® 3 Educational Robot. Participants will earn a ROS 2 Beginner Certificate by learning how to use the command line interface (CLI) and the ROS 2 Python client library (rclpy) to harness the power of their Create® 3 robot.

Live Education Support

In addition to the live Power-On Party on October 17, 3:30PM EST, participants are invited to attend virtual office hours for support on the weekly challenges with the Tufts Center for Engineering Education and Outreach team.
Course sessions will be released weekly; project completion will be asynchronous after the LIVE Power-On Party.

October 17: Power-On Party

Join us for a live Power on Party with your Create® 3 Educational Robot on October 17 at 3:30PM EST. We’ll walk you through unboxing, configuring on wifi, installing ROS 2 through a virtual machine, and sending basic commands to the robot with the Command Line Interface (CLI). Finally, we will introduce the first weekly challenge to start your journey of controlling your Create® 3 robot with ROS 2.

Project 1: Writing Publishers and Subscribers

This episode will walk through a basic publisher and subscriber code using the ROS 2 Python client library. These ROS 2 principles will enable you to complete the weekly challenge, which is using Airtable to control different functionalities of your Create® 3 robot.

Project 2: Writing Action Clients

This episode will teach you how to write basic action client scripts with the ROS 2 Python client library. Then we will demonstrate the weekly challenge, which is re-writing your batch file using rclpy.

Project 3: ROS 2 Packages

This episode will explain why packages are important and how to use them. We’ll focus on how to access various types of files (subscriber, publisher, action client) in one package. This week’s project will focus on writing a file that involves a combination of subscriber, publisher, and/or action client.

Project 4: Exploration Beyond

This episode will discuss taking your custom ROS 2 packages further with expansion opportunities, like serial communication.

Receive Your Certificate

Requirements

To enroll in the Intro to ROS 2 program, participants must have:

- (1) Create 3 Educational Robot,
- (1) desktop OR laptop computer with an internet connection,
- and a Can-Do Attitude!

Commitment

To be eligible to receive an Intro to ROS 2 certificate, participants must:

- Register by October 11th
- Attend the LIVE Power-On Party on October 17 @ 3:30PM EST
- Complete 3 of the 4 portfolio project prompts by November 15.
