By utilizing the multiple programming levels in the iRobot Coding App, each lesson provides multiple opportunities for every student to feel appropriately engaged and academically challenged, regardless of their coding background. This integrated scaffolding in the app & robot promotes a cohesive and inclusive classroom experience.

Jumpstart your coding journey with the Learn to Code Level 1 Curriculum! Explore lessons and projects that celebrate each Level 1 block and make relevant cross curricular connections across subject areas. Units include getting to know your Root Coding Robot and the iRobot Coding App, touch sensors, drawing, loops, and wheel speeds.

Introduction

Each lesson introduces a new programming, robotics or cyber safety concept, led by the classroom facilitator. Through real-world connections and references to previous lessons, everyone establishes a foothold for the session to keep them grounded when exploring.

Exploration

Students are invited to explore the basics of the new concept through a guided discussion or activity. In this open "sandbox" portion of the lesson, students are encouraged to allow their curiosity to drive their learning, in order to unlock exciting problems to be solved.

Skill Development

Student groups then dive into a collaborative robotics activity to develop and demonstrate their new knowledge. These project-based activities highlight communication and problem-solving skills, while keeping students focused on their assigned task with printable activity guides and worksheets.

Reflection

After completing the main activity, the class debriefs with discussion questions or student-led presentations. Each debrief helps students specifically identify what they learned, how they practiced their new skills, and where they can go to push the learning futher.

Extension

For those looking to dive deeper, each lesson is supplemented with both a cross-curricular and Python-based extension activity. These extension activities can stand alone as a lesson for the following day or can serve as an independent homework opportunity.
